Mars Hill Start Date

This past Sunday was my first official Sunday as a Teaching Pastor at Mars Hill Bible Church in Grand Rapids, MI. I got a chance to kick off the season of Lent. Rob and I will be preaching through the book of Jonah. If you want to follow along you can download the podcast here.

For more on how this transition from Trinity to Mars Hill all came about, you can listen to the sermon I preached on it here.

My family and I are still living in Arizona until we finalize the sale of a house and make the big move to the cold, dark, snowy wonderland of West Michigan. If all goes according to plan, this should happen sometime around the end of April (just missing the Phoenix heat, and Grand Rapids winter).

Hi Shane,

My wife and I just listened to your sermon from 1/17---your story. We are both from the Grand Rapids area, and have been on the fringe of the Mars community for several years. Currently, we are living in Missouri. In short, our faith journey has been similar to yours. Stumbling upon (or led to?) the Anabaptist tradition has been a grace---offering us a theology that resonates with and supports what we've been learning and believe is true.

Well, thanks for sharing your story. It makes total sense to us that God would merge an Anabaptist into the Mars community. We are excited to keep listening on-line to what is happening up there. We may be back in GR sometime soon, but right now are enjoying a season of strengthening our own "trunk". Oh, and as a loyal Michigander, nothing beats April through mid-October in Michigan...makes suffering the sloppy winter worth it.

Hey Shane! So glad to have you join us at Mars Hill Bible Church in Grandville, MI. It's been a pleasure getting to know you a bit and participating in the worship services with you. I've enjoyed the Jonah series.
Looking forward to getting to know you better, and to future opportunities to lead our community in worship.

Hello Shane,

Really enjoyed the Jonah series that you've taught - one of the most provocative and incisive I've ever heard!

I do have one question, if you'll indulge me. If Jonah intended to do such a bad job at proclaiming his prophecy to Ninevah, then what's going on in chapter 2, when he's thanking God? Was he really repentant, and his old heart reasserted itself between chapters 2 & 3? Was he just trying to placate God but didn't repent? Or did he consider his life being spared and his oracle to Ninevah disjointed? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Chris

Hey Shane -- it's Anne Jackson. The last time we talked was (geesh) Catalyst last year. Anyway, the only email address I have for you was the one at your former church. I have no idea if you'll even get this comment or not, but if you do, can you please shoot me an email to flowerdust@gmail.com? Many thanks.

Shane, the blog is getting pretty dusty (and the comments, spam -laden). Are you writing elsewhere? I'm an
Educationist of sorts and wanted your take on the best use of each medium we now have at our disposal. What does text do best? What does video or audio? Etc. Thanks for any ideas you have.
